Weight Loss With GLP-1 in Salt Lake City, UT | Modern SLC

Weight Loss With GLP-1 in Holladay, Utah

What is it?

GLP-1 is a glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) analogue that stimulates the secretion of insulin from pancreatic beta cells in response to elevated blood glucose levels. It is an FDA Approved medication for weight loss. GLP-1 delays gastric emptying to make you feel full for longer and decreases your appetite, leading to reduced food intake and weight loss.

How does it work?

Initially you will come in for a consultation to be approved as a candidate to receive GLP-1 injections. The injections are administered subcutaneously to the back of your arm or in your belly once a week with a teeny tiny needle. If you are not able to come in weekly, we will educate you on how to self-administer the injections at home. Every week you will be reassessed to adjust your dosing. Once you have achieved your goal weight, we will slowly titrate down your dosing until you are done.

How much is it?

The first month you come in weekly for a total of 4 weeks. It is $500 for the first month for the weight loss program.

After the first month you can take home the medication monthly to self-administer and this only costs $400/month.

If you would like to add on B12 shots to help with energy and nausea you can add them on for $15/injection or a package of 4 for only $50.

Contraindications/ Side effects

If you have a personal or family history of thyroid nodules or thyroid cancer (such as Medullary Thyroid Carcinoma or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia, type 2) you will not be eligible for this treatment. Other thyroid diseases are approved to receive GLP-1.

As with any medication, there are always some side effects. You may notice some bloating, loss of appetite, nausea or abdominal pain. Nausea usually lessens as you continue to take GLP-1. We also offer vitamin B12 shots to help with nausea.

Frequently Asked Questions

The biggest thing to keep in mind with any weight loss program is that everyone’s body reacts differently. A healthy average for our patients is about 4-8 pounds per month. It’s typical with any type of weight loss journey to see potential plateaus where your weight loss may slow down or stop. Losing weight slowly is not a bad thing, our providers prefer for you to take it slowly as it has been more conducive to maintaining your goal weight when you come off the medication. It is extremely important to establish healthy eating and physical activity habits, not only will it help with the weight loss but also help you keep it off when you finish your journey with us.
Of course! Your first month is a little trickier but we will work with you if you won’t be able to make it to your weekly appointment. We have patients that travel internationally and domestically with the medication. We recommend packing your injections in an insulated water bottle with a couple small cold packs to keep the medication cold until you can store them in the fridge at your destination. Tip: Keep the small cold packs we send you home with at your monthly check-ins-they work very well for packing.
Whether you have reached your health goal or need to stop for other reasons we are here for you! In the case you have reached your health goal and are ready to stop we recommend titrating off of the medication which means you will slowly decrease the dosage you take weekly until you are at the lowest dosage. We have noticed with maintaining your health goal our patients have been more successful if they slowly titrate off the medication rather than abruptly stop. If you need to stop for another reason such as financial constraint, a surgery or many other reasons there is no medical need to continue the medication. In any case we want you to chat with one of our nurses to help guide you!
One of the most important aspects of starting GL-P1 is to establish good eating and physical activity habits. Though it is an incredible medication and will assist you in reaching your goal it is no miracle. Like, any weight loss if you go back to less healthy habits you will gain the weight back. It is very common to see a fluctuation of 5-10lbs after finishing your program but continuing to rely on those healthy habits can help you maintain your weight loss.
