How Botox and Dysport Work

Botox and Dysport are injectables that use the main ingredient botulinum toxin. Botulinum toxin works to reduce wrinkles by blocking the signal from the nerve to muscle, smoothing out and relaxing the muscle which results in decreased wrinkling of the skin. Following injection, you’ll notice improvement within 2-5 days (although it requires a full 14 days for the medicine to completely work), with optimal results for up to 3-4 months.

Target Areas and Quick Treatments

Botox and Dysport are both effective treatments for wrinkles caused by muscle movement, generally on the upper third of the face. With the ability to squeeze in this treatment on your lunch hour, we can help you achieve your anti-aging goals in as little as 15 minutes with no downtime required! They are used most often between the eyebrows, horizontal forehead creases, and crow’s feet along the outside of the eyes. Please see our reference table below for approximate dosing and treatment areas.

Comparing Botox and Dysport

Though Botox and Dysport are made of the same essential ingredients, minor differences are noticed between the two. Botox is known to be a little more “stiff” following treatment and can create a more rigid appearance. Dysport typically requires less time to take effect but presents with softer effects as compared to Botox. Both are effective medications with highly sought-after results.

Quick Answers

It’s easy! You can set up, no-obligation consultation using our online booking link in the profile. Our injector sets apart enough time that if you choose to move forward with injections with them, you can do so in the same time frame if you so choose! (95% of her patients decide to do this!) Our practitioners listening ears, passion for natural results, and trustworthy technique put all her clients at ease and create a welcoming environment for any and all seeking treatment!

Botox/Dysport injections use teeny tiny needles, the same ones used for insulin. It feels like a little pinch. Most often a first-time client’s response is, “That’s it? I thought it would hurt more.”

Fillers also use very small needles and in some cases a cannula, which is a blunt tip type of needle. Often times our practitioners will use a prescription-based numbing cream to make it comfortable. There is also a little medical vibrator that is placed on the face to help distract the nerves from the pokes resulting in a non-pharmaceutical type of pain relief. our practitioners have a very soft touch and takes extra steps to make sure you feel comfortable during all procedures.

Although many people fear they’ll end up with crazy big lips, frozen foreheads, and smiles- this is not the case with a highly trained hand and a listening ear! Cosmetic injections can be subtle and natural to maintain a youthful look.

Botox usually starts working within 2-5 days but takes a full 14 days to reach its full effectiveness. Dysport starts working usually a little faster, within 2-4 days but also needs 14 days to 100% kick in. Both medications should last around 3-4 months, with some movement slowly returning around the 2.5-month mark or so.

Neurotoxins (aka Botox and Dysport) have HUNDREDS of medical use. From bladder spasms to throat disorders, not only cosmetic uses! Though cosmetically, it is commonly used for reducing wrinkles on the forehead, crow’s feet, reducing a gummy smile, bunny lines on the nose, downtown smile, orange peel chin, lip flip, and reduce the platysmas banding in the neck. It can also be used to help with TMJ pain, headaches/migraines, and jaw clenching/grinding. Neurotoxins- the miracle drug!

There is no magic age or time to start Botox or Dysport. Skin wrinkling and lines are very specific to each person. I have seen 18 years with significant wrinkling and I’ve seen 60-year-olds for their first sign of crow’s feet! Our rule of thumb- first, start when you care and can add it. Second, start when you can see static lines at rest and before they become etched in too deep. Once they are etched in they are much harder to eliminate. SO whether you’re 22 or 60- do it when it’s right for you!

While this procedure is lowkey and many first-time clients leave saying “Oh, that’s all it was?!” there are some important steps to take before treatment care! Avoid anything that can thin the blood or make you bruise such as aspirin, ibuprofen, or alcohol for 7 days before the injection.

Botox and Dysport are very safe medications. There are over 700 FDA-approved uses for Botox! Allergic reactions, although possible, are extremely rare. If you have a severe and true milk allergy (not the same as lactose intolerant) Dysport is not a good option for you.

If too much Botox/Dysport is injected it can cause droopy eyebrows. That is why our practitioners always injects small “test” amounts to ensure optimal results and safety!
If the medication is placed incorrectly or moves via the blood supply it can make one eyelid very difficult to open. This can be treated with medication and occurs in approximately 3% of all clients with full return within a few weeks with less likelihood with a more skilled hand (such as our injectors).

Eyebrows can sometimes be slightly uneven after a treatment, mainly because your eyebrows are uneven, to begin with! One eyebrow might have stronger muscles above it, to begin with, and may require additional medication or hold the medication slightly differently. But overall, if one eyebrow is too high it can be easily corrected with minor injectable touch-ups and medication adjustments to achieve a symmetrical brow line!
“Spock” eyebrows can occur if an injector does not put any or enough Botox/Dysport above the eyebrows. Again, this can be resolved with a little touch-up and a highly trained hand.
The good news when it comes to Botox and Dysport issues is that they will ALWAYS resolve because the medication effects are temporary!

Most injectors will tell you that you need Botox/Dysport every 3 months. Of course, they do, it’s good for their pocketbook! But truthfully, no one NEEDS Botox. So you should get it as often as you like and as your finances allow. Our injector usually recommends that it’s a good idea to do it twice a year if it’s something you want to keep up on and prevent wrinkles from forming. Three times a year is probably the most realistic and if you can do it every 3 months, great! Our practitioners are here for you when you’re ready.

Botox and Dysport are both broken down naturally by your body over 3-4 months. Once the medication is administered you do have to wait for it to wear off over time.

Of course, living in Utah is a common question. Technically, no Botox/Dysport really moves much from when you place them. So it probably wouldn’t be an issue. But then there are these people called lawyers and they LOVE opportunities to sue people. Plus, if something happened to your baby while pregnant you might try to blame it on yourself for getting injections, and let’s be honest none of that is worth it! So let’s just avoid getting things done while pregnant. However, most nursing hotlines and OB/GYNs will tell you it’s fine to do while breastfeeding. Just make sure you bring the baby with you so we can see how cute it is!
